A friend of mine sent me this video.  It's a clip of long-time Navigator John Crawford talking about an interaction he had with Dawson Trotman, founder of The Navigators.  What Dawson said to John is still at the center of our mission!

I thought the video and the presentation of the gospel was very good...up until the end where he stated now "the onus is back on you".

Now, at that point, he just turned the beautiful gospel that he already presented, into the law ... making it dependent on 'what we do' (the decision).

Had he just stopped, before that (and let the Spirit take over), it would have been much better.

Thanks!

I think I'll use the same video on my blog (in a day or two- if it's all right with you).

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your comment!

Would you mind elaborating a little more on your difficulty and alternative? I think I know what you mean, but I want to make sure we're on the same page before I weigh in.

Grace,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Well, I mean that the gospel can stand on it's own without our having 'to do' anything.

Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit that comes by hearing the Word. When the preacher hands uses the law to convict of sin (as did the gentleman in the video)and then hands over Christ, the Antidote, the Spirit can go to work on the heart of the hearer.

The correct sequence ought be law/gospel...not law/gospel/law (our having 'to do' something to make the gospel effective in our lives.

I'm a Lutheran, and we are not "free-will" Christians, so to speak.

Anywho, I appreciate the chance to chime in on your wonderful blog.

Thanks, much!

- Steve

Thanks for the clarification Steve! I definitely see your point and want to avoid giving people the impression that they must/can gain God's favor through the law.

I see the question, "which way represents the way you want to live?" as an invitation to introspection and evaluation in light of the gospel.

Thanks, Jeff.

I can ceratinly see your point. I do critique...always looking to keep the gospel pure as possible, letting God be God.

Take care, my friend, and keep up the good work!

- Steve
